Welcome to Africa and Explore Kampala, Uganda’s Capital ~ The Gorilla Expedition

Your first adventure starts as soon as you clear immigration.  Here, you will meet your guide and begin the drive to central Kampala, Uganda’s Capital City. After a brief stop in a shopping center to exchange money and pick up necessities, proceed to your luxury hotel.  Depending on your preferences and time of arrival, you can choose to either spend the rest of the day in your suite or join the guide on a tour of Kampala.  Popular attractions in Kampala include the Ghaddafi National Mosque with brilliant sunset views and the Rubaga-Kathedrale, the seat of Catholicism in Uganda.

Later in the day, meet your guide in the lobby for the first briefing.  During the initial briefing your guide will share with you maps and helpful information about your journey.  Afterwards, enjoy a delicious dinner expertly prepared in your five-star hotel.

The Equator and Lake Mburo National Park

After early breakfast, set out in your luxury Land Cruiser.  As you drive the road that connects Kampala with Uganda’s national parks, the typical Ugandan scenery appears before you.  First you see the red, dusty road stretch into the horizon.  The women walking with heavy loads balanced on their heads and the children off to school in their neat uniforms.  Eventually, you and your Outskirts Safari guide arrive in the first stop of the day - the equator village.

Uganda is an equatorial nation, located on both the southern and the northern hemispheres.  In this village you can stand on both hemispheres at the same time – a fun stop and a great place for pictures.

The next destination is Lake Mburu National Park.  Conveniently located just a few hours from Kampala, this park is known for its large numbers of grazers, including zebra, gazelle and wildebeest.  We arrive just in time for lunch and set out on our first safari game drive.  As the plains unfold before you, the grazers appear in endless numbers.  Before sunset you can explore the plains on horseback or bicycle – a unique option available only in Lake Mburo.  If you prefer, skip the evening safari to spend time in your luxury lodge and indulge in an optional massage included with the tour.  In the evening enjoy a delicious meal and join the other travelers and guides around a roaring campfire.

Adventure to Bwindi

Wake up for a pre-dawn breakfast as you set out on a sunrise safari. The plain looks very different in the morning.  As the grazers awaken you might find some predators out for an early meal.  Today you will travel via the scenic path from Lake Mburo to Bwidni National Park.  Gaze out of the window at the rolling terraced hills of Kigezi.  Eventually, the hills turn into the thick jungle as you enter the Bwindi National Park.  Often called the “impenetrable forest” Bwindi is home to one of the largest wild mountain gorilla populations on earth.  Tomorrow the Gorilla Expedition awaits but tonight you have time to relax after a long journey.  Dine in style and enjoy a strong drink by the campfire as you reminisce on your memories of your third day in Africa.

The Impenetrable Forest in Bwindi

Today is the day you have been waiting for.  After an early breakfast, join a small group and experienced rangers for a briefing.  Before you enter the impenetrable forest, you will receive important instructions. The gorillas are used to human presence and they are open to being observed.  That does not mean they will be easy to find.  You may trek for a few hours through the deep jungle. As you walk, further in, the mist begins to descend.  The hike takes on an almost otherworldly quality in this pristine forest.  Eventually, you find them – large families of 12 or more individuals.  They are just as aware of you as you are of them and you may make eye contact.  The intelligence in their eyes is startling – and their mannerisms are very human like.  Only feet apart, you watch them – and they watch you.

In the afternoon, join an optional Outskirts Safaris tour to the Batwa Pygmi tribe village.  The Pygmi people are called “The Keepers of the Forest.”  They were the original inhabitants of the impenetrable Bwindi forest before the establishment of the national parks.  They lived a hunter gatherer lifestyle, hunting mostly small game.  On your visit you can learn more about this tribe’s unique culture, meet the elders, and purchase some unusual souvenirs.

At night, enjoy dinner and campfire as you re-live the memories of the gorilla expedition with your fellow travelers.

The Journey to Kampala

After breakfast, when you drive away from the impenetrable forest, you may find yourself reminiscing about the gorilla experience once more.  The faces of the great apes, only feet from yours, their intelligent eyes looking back at you, evaluating you.  This image is likely to stay with you forever.

However, civilization beckons and so we make the trek back to the capital. Along the way observe typical scenes of Uganda’s every-day life and stop in a local village for lunch.  In the afternoon join your Outskirts Safari driver for more sightseeing in Kampala or relax back in your hotel.

Goodbye Africa

Today the adventure comes to an end – but we hope its just the beginning.  On this one-week journey you saw some incredible sites – but there is so much more to see here.  As your driver takes you back to the airport, say your goodbyes – or better yet, say see you later.  The Outskirts Safari team will always welcome you back as our honored guests, in our beautiful home Uganda.
